Frequently asked questions

Yes. Quoted fields may contain commas and line breaks, and doubled quotes inside a quoted field become one literal quote. For example, a quoted address with a comma stays in one cell, while an unquoted comma splits columns. Parsing runs on-device with no upload, and the input is capped at 500,000 characters.

Yes. Click a column header to sort ascending or descending, and type in the filter box to narrow rows. Numeric columns sort numerically, so 29 comes before 36, while text columns sort lexically. Filtering and sorting run locally, and the table shows the first 100 matching rows.

No. CSV parsing, sorting, filtering and JSON export run fully in your browser. Pasted text is capped at 500,000 characters, and the first 100 matching rows are displayed. Closing the tab clears the data, and no account or upload is used.

RFC 4180 requires fields with commas to be wrapped in quotes, with inner quotes doubled for safety. Thus address 12 Main St, Apt 4 stays one cell, while unquoted variant splits columns. Our parser keeps quoted commas and doubled quotes inside the correct field.

Sort numerically for ages and prices to place 9 before 36, avoiding lexical trap where 100 precedes 20. For example, age 29 and 36 sort correctly numerically, while text sort misorders invoices. Our viewer auto-detects types and preserves stable order for ties. Use lexical sorting for names where alphabetical browsing aids lookup across records offline.

How to use CSV Viewer

  1. Paste CSV: Paste header name, age, city and rows Ada,36,Lagos and Bob,29,Nairobi into the input area.
  2. View table: Inspect sortable grid with 3 columns and type-aware alignment, confirming age 29 sorts before 36 numerically correctly.
  3. Filter and copy: Type Bob into the filter box to isolate one row, sort age descending, then copy the filtered and sorted rows as JSON.
  4. Try an example: Paste name, age rows Ada,36 and Bob,29, sort age ascending to verify 29 appears first before exporting JSON output.

In-depth guide

What grid views show

The grid turns pasted CSV into a sortable, searchable table with type inference and JSON export. Example: paste name, age, city with Ada 36 Lagos and Bob 29 Nairobi to see two rows, with numeric ages right-aligned. Quoted commas and line breaks stay inside their fields, carriage returns are trimmed, and blank headers become Column 1, Column 2, and so on. The viewer shows the first 100 matching rows, caps input at 500,000 characters, and keeps everything in the browser; closing the tab clears the data. It is useful for checking an export before importing it into a spreadsheet or database.

How quotes, sorts and finds work

The parser follows RFC 4180 quoting: commas inside quotes stay in the field, doubled quotes become one literal quote, and unquoted commas split cells. Reference behavior: a quoted address with a comma stays one cell | an unquoted comma splits two cells | a doubled quote becomes a single quote | numeric 36 sorts before 100 | text 100 sorts before 20 | an empty cell renders blank. Clicking a header toggles ascending and descending order; numeric detection prevents 1,000 from sorting before 20. Edge case: mixed codes such as A10 and A2 sort lexically unless you pad them, so normalize identifiers first.

CSV viewer worked example: Ada 36 and Bob 29 sort by age

Paste name, age with Ada,36 and Bob,29, click the age header, and confirm 29 precedes 36 numerically. Type Bob in the filter box to isolate that row, then copy the filtered and sorted rows as JSON. Ragged rows with missing trailing commas are padded with blanks. Only comma delimiters are supported, so convert semicolon- or tab-separated files first. Duplicate header names receive _1 and _2 suffixes, blank headers become Column 1 and Column 2, and cells beginning with =, +, - or @ are prefixed with an apostrophe before display and JSON export. Embedded newlines inside quoted fields are preserved, Windows CRLF row endings are handled, and sorting ties keep their original order. The JSON button copies an object array keyed by header labels. Limitation: the viewer reads, sorts, filters and exports JSON only; it does not edit cells, evaluate formulas, join tables, or export CSV, and it displays at most 100 matching rows. For format conversion use /json-csv; for spreadsheet export explore /json-to-excel.
